Sporty Peugeot 308 GT to take on Leon FR

New Peugeot 308 GT hatch and estate get a racy look and extra power to take on SEAT rival

This is the Peugeot 308 GT, a warmed up model that works a bit like SEAT’s sporty Leon FR cars in providing extra power and style compared with the standard versions.

Prices are yet to be revealed, but the GT models will cost more than the current Feline range-toppers. That means a starting price of around £25,000.

A proper Leon Cupra and Volkswagen Golf GTI rival is set for a later date, with sources suggesting it could wear the GTi badge, rather than R.

The GT comes as a five-door hatch or an SW estate, powered by either a 202bhp 1.6-litre THP or 178bhp 2.0-litre BlueHDi. They’re marked out by a lower ride height and bespoke styling cues, including a Peugeot badge within the grille – rather than on the bonnet – full LED headlights and an aerodynamic bodykit.

A set of engraved 18-inch wheels is fitted as standard, while at the back there’s a black diffuser, twin tailpipes and special GT badging. The Magnetic Blue paintjob in these pictures is exclusive to the sportiest member of the 308 family.

Peugeot 308 GT interior
Peugeot has enhanced the interior, too, with red contrast stitching throughout and a new perforated leather steering wheel, complete with GT badge. Plus, you’ll find a chequered flag logo in the instrument cluster.

Peugeot hasn’t published 0-62mph figures yet, but the petrol is likely to post a time of just under seven seconds, with the diesel taking around 7.5 seconds.

The in-gear performance of the diesel is said to be particularly impressive, with Peugeot claiming it’ll go from 50-70mph in fifth gear in 5.5 seconds, while delivering 70.6mpg fuel economy and emitting just 103g/km. That beats the 109g/km figure on offer in the Golf GTD. The GT’s handling, meanwhile, is improved by a different chassis set-up.
