Honda F1 engine for 2015 revealed in teaser video

Honda has previewed its power unit for McLaren's car in the 2015 F1 season in a new teaser video

As McLaren and Honda unite in Formula 1 for the first time in 22 years, the Japanese company has revealed a teaser and photo of its new power unit for the 2015 F1 season. Although it doesn't get too specific on details, you can see and hear the engine in action.

While all eyes are on who will be driving for McLaren at this time, with Fernando Alonso rumoured to be rejoining the team, Honda appears to be well underway with testing. The firm's return to the sport couldn't have come at a better time, with two performance models, the new NSX sports car and the Civic Type R, reappearing next year.

The last time the two companies paired up, the results were astonishing. Between 1988 and 1992, McLaren and Honda won eight world championships and 44 grand prix races, took 53 pole positions and set 30 fastest laps with Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna – all in just 80 races. And McLaren is looking decidedly off the pace this year, so it could do with a rejuvenation like this.

Here is Honda's exciting new teaser video, in which you can hear the F1 car

The video shows lots of graphics that hint towards the company's past, then calls this "a new beginning". Then there is a simulated lap, in which you can clearly hear the 1.6-litre turbocharged V6 in all its glory, although it seems to rev even less than the current engines do.

As before, the small direct-injection V6 engine will be mated with two electric motors – one working with a KERS recovery system, the other powering a big turbocharger. Honda hasn't released full specs of its powertrain, but expect in excess of 600bhp and, we hope, one of the most competitive cars on the field.
