2015 Volkswagen Golf R price starts at $37,415

VW's hot hatch is the most powerful Golf to be offered in the U.S.

Volkswagen revealed pricing information for the 2015 Golf R, the most powerful version of the popular hatch to be offered in the U.S...for now.

Due to go on sale in the U.S. during the first quarter of 2015 (only in four-door form, initially) the Golf R wil start at $37,415 paired with the DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission. A manual transmission will not be offered, at least at launch. Volswagen will also offer a more technology-heavy version with DCC adaptive damping and navigation which will start at $39,910.

The 2015 Golf R will produce 295 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque courtesy of its turbocharged and direct-injection EA888 TSI engine, a gain of 36 hp and 37 lb-ft over the outgoing model. Even though the 2015 model will gain power, Volkswagen promises it'll be more fuel efficient than its predecessor, returning an EPA-estimated highway fuel economy rating of 30 mpg with the DSG transmission, a small bump over the 27 mpg highway economy allowed by the previous version. Volkswagen's six-speed DSG will offer a launch control feature, which will enable the driver to send the hatch from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.9 seconds, and up to a top speed of 155 mph (on a closed track, of course). Preventing the Golf R from sitting still and burning up its tires will be the latest version of 4Motion all-wheel drive with a fifth-generation Haldex coupling.

Volkswagen's newest U.S.-market hot hatch will be distinguishable from the regular Golf by redesigned bumpers front and back, new side skirts, Bi-Xenon headlights, redesigned LED daytime running lights in a dual-U shape, and a quad-pipe exhaust system with chrome tips. The Golf R will also be offered with the option of 18-inch or 19-inch aluminum alloy wheels, while the interior will receive a leather-wrapped three-spoke sport steering wheel, sport seats with leather seating surfaces, ambient lighting, and R-spec instruments.

The base Golf R will offer Driving Mode Selection, a 5.8-inch touchscreen radio with SiriusXM, LED reading lights, ambient lighting, heated front seats, iPhone connectivity, keyless access with pushbutton start, VW Car-Net telematics, a rearview camera, and a 12-way power driver's seat among other amenities.

The upmarket model with DCC and navigation will add a few more goodies with 19-inch wheels standard, in addition to front and rear park distance control, and a Fender premium audio system.

Volkswagen is offering pre-ordering for the first 500 examples of the Golf R, which will come with an exclusive numbered R accessory kit.
