Tesla Model X to be four-wheel drive only

Tesla has quietly confirmed powertrain details of its 2016 Model X SUV, production model will get 'falcon wing' doors

Tesla has confirmed details on the near-production Model X SUV on its website, ahead of the car's launch date in early 2016. Based on the platform of the Model S executive saloon, it's set to be four-wheel drive only with dual electric motors.

The California-based firm has updated the main page for the SUV on its website, which now states that "every Model X comes standard with Dual Motor All Wheel Drive". This means the firm has decided not to offer the single-motor setup with rear wheel drive, which appears on every Model S except the P85D.

The placement of an electic motor on each axle creates what the company calls a “constantly variable torque split” which replicates a traditional four-wheel drive system. This means not only improved all-weather grip but faster acceleration. The P85D Model S is capable of 0-62mph in 3.2 seconds, and we can expect not far off that time for the Model X if it gets the same powertrain.

Other options include the less powerful 60 and 85kWh setups offered on the Model S, which will offer a 0-62 time closer to five seconds. A similar all-electric range of 300 miles is also claimed.

Like the concept we saw in Detroit back in 2013, the production Model X will get the striking 'Falcon Wing' doors at the rear, which open upwards on roof-mounted hinges. The Model X is available to reserve now online, but further details such as prices and specs will be announced later in the year.
