Tesla vs. Tesla drag race proves all-wheel drive Model S P85D is outrageously quick

With an extra motor and two extra driven wheels, this isn't even a fair fight

Look, we all knew that the all-wheel drive Tesla Model S P85D sedan was going to be quick off the line -- the rear-wheel drive version of the car is no slouch over the quarter-mile and adding an extra motor and two more driven wheels means more torque to the ground, right?

Even after watching this video, though, it's hard to believe just how much faster than its stablemate the P85D really is. We're talking about 0-60 in 3.3 seconds, according to the testers at dragtimes.com (Tesla says 3.2 seconds is attainable). It's not even a fair fight, with the 619-hp P85D rocketing off the line as the 415-hp P85 struggles for traction. According to onboard sensors, the all-wheel drive car pulled 1.29 G off the line. Talk about thrust...

The only thing we'd change about the above video is adding a standing camera to give a better sense of just how quickly both cars are moving relative to the ground. Oh, and we'd do the whole thing on a closed drag strip instead of a service drive -- safety first, etc.

If it seems like you've been reading a lot about Tesla Motors here lately, that's probably because the electric automaker has been busy (even if its stock prices have taken something of a slide over the past few months). Its battery-swapping technology is entering the public testing phase, and a suite of upgrades for its out-of-production Roadster should help keep the company's first car on the cutting edge. We're interested to see what's in store for 2015.
