NEW SAFETY FEATURES, NINE-SPEED TRANS HEADLINE CHANGES
The seven-passenger 2016 Acura MDX goes on sale Feb. 4 with an updated engine, a broader model range and more. Prices start at $43,785, including destination. That’s a $100 premium over last year’s model.
Acura’s 3.5-liter DOHC V6 is now connected to a nine-speed automatic transmission with the company’s Sequential SportShift technology. Acura says the trans is 66 pounds lighter than the outgoing model, with closer gear ratios and 25 percent faster shifts. It also improves front/rear weight balance. Output is rated at 290 hp at 6,200 rpm and 267 lb-ft of torque at 4,500 rpm. Mileage is rated at 19 mpg in the city and 27 on the highway. Those go up 1 mpg with a stop/start system.
The entire MDX line gets the next generation of Acura’s Super Handling All-Wheel Drive. It uses a new twin-clutch rear differential that weighs 19 pounds less than the previous unit. As always, the SH-AWD system can progressively distribute torque to each wheel individually for maximum control. Acura says torque-vectoring effectiveness has been improved for even more stability.
The MDX is now available with Acura’s Road Departure Mitigation and Rear Cross Traffic Monitor under the AcuraWatch suite of safety features, which combine camera and radar technologies to identify possible problems on the road. The package includes seven additional safety systems and comes standard with the Advance Package.
Other improvements include a frameless rearview mirror, Siri Eyes-Free voice control, easy entry with moving seats and a tire pressure monitoring system that beeps when the tires are properly inflated. A multi-angle rear camera with guidelines is also optional.
Like all Acuras, the MDX is offered with the tech package ($4,425), entertainment package ($2,000), advance package ($10,215) and the AcuraWatch package ($1,500). Go to Acura’s site to find out which options are in what package. Topped out, the MDX can sticker for about $57,000.
