JUST BECAUSE YOU CAN, DOES THAT MEAN YOU SHOULD?
In a move sure to excite dozens of potential buyers, Land Rover has announced that the 2016 Range Rover Evoque cabriolet is confirmed for production. According to the automaker, a production version of the concept, which debuted in 2012, will make its first public appearance at the upcoming Geneva motor show -- right alongside the refreshed non-convertible Evoque.
That’s great news for all you CrossCabriolet owners and intenders saddened by Nissan's decision to take its drop-top crossover out of production! Beyond that, we’re not sure exactly which segment of the market a convertible soft-roader is supposed to serve. The more weird vehicles out there in the world the better, we suppose.
When Land Rover/Range Rover first showed off the Evoque cabrio concept, it said removing the roof would add about 165 pounds to the ute’s curb weight (that weight comes from all the bracing needed to keep the vehicle from flopping down the road). If that’s still true, it’ll sit just above the 3,800-pound mark. We assume the U.S.-bound version of the model will come equipped with a 2.0-liter gasoline inline-four.
Look, we’re sure you like to drool over the Aston Martin Vulcan and the Mercedes-AMG GT3; we do, too. But the Range Rover Evoque cabriolet is, for better or for worse, a car you’re actually somewhat likely to see on the street -- let alone drive or buy (you know, if you’re into that sort of thing).
Anyway, we’ll bring you more information from the Geneva show floor. Until then, check out this preview video of Range Rover testing a camouflaged Evoque convertible in a series of tunnels deep below London. Because what better place to test a new convertible than deep, deep underground, right?
