ROAD-LEGAL ‘LONGTAIL’ LOSES WEIGHT, GAINS POWER OVER 650S
The Geneva auto show is shaping up to be supercar heaven with new cars from Aston Martin, a final edition of the Bugatti Veyron and two new McLarens, including today’s subject: the 675LT “Longtail.”
The 675LT gets power from McLaren’s current workhorse engine, the 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged V8, though about 50 percent of the parts have been changed. Upgrades include more efficient turbos, changes to the cylinder heads and exhaust manifolds, new camshaft and lightweight connecting rods and a faster-flowing fuel pump. In this application it makes 666 hp (that’s 675 PS, or pfederstarke -- the German measure of horsepower), and 516 lb-ft of torque. The sprint to 62 mph (100 km/h) takes 2.9 seconds; getting to 124 mph (200 km/h) takes 7.9 seconds. Top speed is rated at 205 mph. Power is channeled through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission to the rear wheels.
McLaren says the 675LT focuses on weight reduction, optimized aerodynamics, more power and track-focused handling. About one-third of the parts have been changed over the 650S. Both fall into the McLaren Super Series of cars.
New styling cues include an extended carbon fiber front splitter, additional cooling intake, an extended door blade (a la the Audi R8) and twin central exhaust pipes in back. The airbrake is also 50 percent bigger than the 650S, though, because of its carbon fiber construction, is lighter. It’s also where the “Longtail” name comes from. In total, the McLaren 675LT weighs just 2,711 pounds dry.
The 675LT is offered in five color schemes, four of which are new. Silica white, delta red, napier green and chicane gray are new for the car. McLaren orange is the fifth, and is the returning hue. The exterior colors are accented in the stripped-out interior, which includes lightweight Alcantara seats with 675LT logos, logos on the rev counter and optional air conditioning.
The McLaren 675LT makes its world debut in Geneva on March 3.
