DROP-TOP COULD ARRIVE BY 2018, CAR MAGAZINE REPORTS
The cheerful little Mini Superleggera Vision concept has made quite a splash since it made its debut at the 2014 Concorso d’Eleganza at Villa d’Este; over the past year, it’s been spotted everywhere from Mini auto show booths to the cover of Autoweek magazine.
And according to a report by Car magazine, it’s just been confirmed for production -- possibly as early as the 2018 model year. Wait a second -- didn’t Mini just announce its intentions to slim down its somewhat muddled model lineup?

Not that we care too much in this case. With its charmingly round lines and a design peppered with clever Easter eggs (the taillights, for example, form a Union Jack), the Superleggera concept recaptured much of the fun that the Mini brand was supposed to stand for. Besides, if it replaces the slow-selling, awkwardly proportioned Mini Roadster, we’ll say we more than broke even on the deal.
At its debut, the Superleggera concept was said to be powered by an electric, or perhaps a plug-in hybrid, powertrain. No word on whether that might carry over to production, but it wouldn’t be our first brush with an electric Mini. As for the hand-made body by Touring? That’ll definitely have to go.
