750 MORE SEDANS AND WAGONS TO BE PRODUCED
Volvo has been persuaded to let the speed-crazed tinkerers from tuning partner Polestar brew another batch of souped-upS60 sedans and V60 station wagons. After the sedan and wagon duo quickly sold out last year in the eight countries where Volvo officially offered them through its dealership network, the automaker has announced that along with Polestar it will produce another 750 cars for 13 countries for the 2016 model year.
Polestar has been tuning and racing Volvos since the 1990s, but its worldwide debut came with the introduction of the C30 hatch through the Volvo dealer network, which was followed by the S60 sedan in Australia in 2013. The U.S. received a total of 120 Polestar Volvos in 2014: 80 wagons and 40 sedans in the tuning company's signature Rebel Blue or Black Sapphire, with the cars finding homes in no time at all.
Polestar's S60 and V60 are powered by a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six gasoline producing 350 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque, with a six-speed automatic sending all that power to all four wheels. These power figures are good enough to propel the S60 sedan from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.7 seconds, with the longroof versions making the same spring in 4.8 seconds.
"The Volvo S60 and V60 Polestar are selling faster than we expected, and we have, as a result, decided to expand into new markets. Polestar remains an integral performance brand partner and this is a clear sign of confidence in the potential of this partnership," said Anders H. Gustavsson, vice president special products at Volvo Car Group.
Volvo has not confirmed just how many sedans and wagons the U.S. will receive this time around, as the pie will be split a bit differently with 13 countries slated to receive the cars. And the countries that have been added to list are far from Polestar's home: Bahrain, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates will receive an allotment.
Volvo has not mentioned pricing for the duo just yet, though it's worth pointing out that the 2015 versions of the S60 Polestar sedan started at $60,225, while the wagon started at $61,825.
