Audi will aim its next two gasoline plug-in hybrids at Chinese customers as the automaker seeks to maintain its sales lead over rivals BMW and Mercedes-Benz in the world’s biggest auto market.
The Audi Q7 e-tron 2.0 TFSI Quattro and the A6L e-tron will join the A3 Sportback e-tron in the carmaker’s green lineup next year. The plug-in A6L will be sold only in China while the plug-in Q7 will be available in China, Japan and Singapore, Audi said in a statement.
Both vehicles will debut at the Shanghai auto show on Monday.
A diesel variant of the Q7 e-tron will go on sale in Europe and the U.S. next year.
First plug-in quattro
The Q7 e-tron, Audi’s first quattro model to have a plug-in hybrid powertrain, will mate a 2.0-liter TFSI gasoline engine with an electric motor that can power the car for 53km (33 miles) on battery power alone. The Q7 e-tron delivers fuel economy of 2.5 liters/100km (94.1 mpg U.S./113 mpg UK), Audi said.
The A6L e-tron, which is a long-wheelbase version of the A6 sedan built in China, also uses the 2.0-liter TFSI engine coupled with an electric motor integrated into the automatic transmission that provides power to the front wheels. The plug-in uses just 2.2 liters/100km (106.9 mpg U.S./128.3 mpg UK), Audi said.
Growing market share in China is key to Audi and Mercedes' goal of taking the global luxury sales crown from BMW by 2020.
In the first quarter, Audi sold 133,316 vehicles in China, a rise of 7.1 percent, making it the market's No. 1 premium brand. BMW’s namesake brand sold 108,633 vehicles, a rise of 7.6 percent, while Mercedes brand deliveries were up 17 percent to 78,183 in the first three months, making it the No. 3 in the market.
