Volkswagen Golf Alltrack shows off Kommandowagen livery

ALL-WHEEL DRIVE VW WAGON DEBUTS AT RETTMOBIL EMERGENCY VEHICLE SHOW

The city of Fulda, Germany, is hosting Europe's largest annual emergency equipment show this week, with hundreds of vendors showcasing their fire fighting and paramedic gear. For automakers, the RETTmobil expo is a chance to show off their latest vehicles modified for police, medical, and fire-fighting use, with automakers and coachbuilders debuting vehicles we almost never encounter in emergency livery of any sort in the U.S.

This year Volkswagen has created a fire department command car, or Kommandowagen (KdoW), based on the Golf Alltrack. In civilian guise even without all the emergency equipment the Alltrack features Volkswagen's 4Motion all-wheel drive system, an extra inch of ground clearance, flared side sills for body protection and wheelarch moldings. In Kommandowagen form, the Golf Alltrack has been equipped with a Hansch LED lightbar on an aerodynamic lid, blue LED strobes hidden in the grille, and mounted into the frame of the rear door as well as communications equipment inside.

The Kommandowagen Golf Alltrack also features redundant electrical outlets, two fire extinguishers, a siren system, PA system and prewiring for console-mounted computers and additional communications gear. The interior also offers a system used to record the aftermath of accidents for fire department records and court use and a supplemetary oxygen equipment for the fire officials themselves.

When will you be able to order up some reflective decals for your Alltrack to play Kommando in the Kommandowagen? The car is due to land in the states in 2016 as a 2017 model. In addition to the extra clearance and body cladding, the Golf Alltrack's 4Motion all-wheel drive system features a Haldex-5 coupling activated through an electro-hydraulic oil pump that allows the station wagon to channel most of its torque to the front wheels. When the system detects wheel slip, up to 50 percent of the torque can be sent to the rear wheels. In addition, the system features electronic differential locks at the front and rear which use brake applications to slow the slipping wheels. The Golf Alltrack borrows its engines from the rest of theGolf lineup, which means a 1.8-liter direct-injection turbo four producing 170 hp and 190 lb-ft of torque, and a 2.0-liter turbocharged diesel producing 150 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque.

Volkswagen debuted the Golf Alltrack at the Paris Motor Show last fall, with the wagon meant to challenge Subaru's near-hegemony when it comes to small non-premium all-wheel drive wagons in the States. When it lands stateside, the SportWagen Alltrack will take on the Subaru XV and other small crossovers.

In addition to the Golf Alltrack, Volkswagen is showing a Touareg SUV and an Amarok pickup modified for beach rescue in addition to an armored Transporter T6 and a couple of ambulance models. The Transporter, in particular, promises to be an interesting entry into Volkswagen's Rettungsfahrzeuge division as one of the few factory-armored MPVs unveiled in the last 20 years -- Mercedes-Benz has ceded the armored MPV segment to coachbuiders.
