Toyota Prius Plug-In sets Nurburgring mpg lap record

Toyota's plug-in hybrid Prius sets a new Nurburgring lap record for the most fuel efficient lap, managing 698mpg

The Nurburgring usually conjures up images of rapid lap times, as car manufacturers compete to prove their latest product is up to scratch when it comes to performance and handling.

You may therefore be surprised to learn that Toyota had a slightly different achievement in mind when its Prius Plug-In Hybrid set off round the 12.9 mile Nordschliefe circuit.

The Japanese manufacturer was attempting to set a record for the most fuel-efficient lap, a feat the mid-size hatchback achieved by managing a startling 698mpg.

The lap took 20 minutes and 59 seconds, and took place during a public session, with the Prius having to deal with on-track traffic while adhering to all circuit rules, including the 37mph minimum average speed.

Toyota claims less than five tablespoons of fuel were required for the run, thanks to the full hybrid system that pairs a 1.8-litre petrol engine to a compact, rechargeable lithium-ion battery.

This tech meant the Prius was able to complete most of the circuit in its all-electric EV mode, resulting in the incredibly high economy figure that far outstrips its nonetheless impressive official combined cycle figure of 134mpg.
