Kia Optima T-Hybrid revealed

Kia is forging ahead with hybrid technology and will showcase the diesel-electric Optima T-Hybrid in Paris. Kia will showcase its future hybrid technology at the Paris Motor Show with the Optima T-Hybrid concept.
The Korean manufacturer is ready to give the green light for mass production on the new powertrain, which combines the brand’s existing 1.7-litre CRDi turbodiesel engine with a small electric motor powered by a 48V lead-carbon battery.
The powertrain allows the Optima T-Hybrid to run on electric power alone at lower speeds and when cruising.
Fitted with the diesel-electric tech, Kia is expecting a 20 per cent increase in power as well as a significant drop in CO2 emissions for the Optima T-Hybrid over the current diesel powered Optima. No official fuel economy figures have been revealed as the powertrain is still under development.

The new powertrain has also allowed Kia to fit an electric supercharger to the diesel motor, helping boost engine response at lower speeds. Lead-carbon batteries as opposed to the more popular lithium-ion batteries have also been fitted, which require no active cooling and are easier to recycle.
Sharing the stage with the Optima T-Hybird at the Paris Motor Show this week will also be updated version of the Kia Rio supermini and Venga mini-MPV.
