Ferrari says six Pininfarina Sergio roadsters will be built; no word on the matching helmets

Put the checkbook down, they're already sold out

The Ferrari 458-based Pininfarina Sergio concept that debuted last year is getting a production run, according to CNNMoney -- though only six of the radically re-sculpted spiders will be built and sold at an unspecified price.

We’re sure this has everything to do with the late founder of the famed design house and absolutely nothing to do with Sergio Marchionne, who officially took the helm at Ferrari earlier this month.

Naming inspiration aside, the timing of this car -- along with the limited-edition F60 America that emerged in early October -- should help underscore Marchionne’s pledge to keep Ferrari exclusive, even if the automaker might be gearing up to sell a few more cars per year.

Like the concept -- said to be a sort of topless, deconstructed tribute to the 1965 Dino Berlinetta Speciale -- the production Sergio likely uses the 458 Italia’s underpinnings, motor and seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

The radical lightweight bodywork and aerodynamics should help a handful of lucky owners (or at least the smaller subset of those owners who will actually drive their cars) squeeze even more out of that 562-hp V8. That’s assuming the motor isn’t uptuned.

Less likely to appear on the street car is the windshield-less configuration. The initial concept supposed that a driver and passenger would tool around in body color-matched helmets, but Pininfarina designer Fabio Filippini previously suggested that the production version could get a small windshield.

There’s no stated price for the Sergio. Of course, how much it weighs, how much it costs and how well it performs is of little consequence. Only six “production” Sergios will be offered for sale on an invitation-only basis.

Or should we say were offered for sale: As is our custom when a limited-edition Ferrari is announced, we’re sorry to inform you that the entire half-dozen car run has already been sold. Better luck next time.- See more at: http://autoweek.com/article/car-news/ferrari-says-it-will-build-six-pininfarina-sergio-roadsters-no-word-matching#sthash.AkchWJKw.dpuf
