According to leaked document, newest AMG sports car finds a nearly unnoccupied price spot in the market
The 503-hp 2016 Mercedes-AMG GT S will hit your wallet for $129,900 when it comes to dealerships in April, if an internal document that Jalopnik got hold of is to be believed (Mercedes has since confirmed the price). That base price puts the GT S in rarefied air, above obvious competitors like the Jaguar F-Type R and Porsche 911 Carrera S.
The one car it matches up perfectly with is the Maserati GranTurismo Sport, which starts at $132,000. We’re just not sure those two cars would ever be cross-shopped. We drove the GT S late last year, and predictably enjoyed the hell out of it.
The Audi R8 ($115,900) and the Nissan GT-R ($101,000) could conceivably go up against the GT S, though they both have all-wheel drive. We suspect Mercedes priced the car in a weird spot on purpose. It’s way cheaper than the SLS AMG ever was, and it’s lower than the 911 Turbos of the world, both of which hit near $200K. We suppose buyers may also consider the BMW M4 and M6, though the GT S out-prices even the gigantic M6, which starts at about $111,000.
Eventually we're going to need graphs and charts to sort this out. But not now. April can't come soon enough.
