FLAGSHIP TOYOTA SEDAN GETS SIX TRIMS, MULTIPLE POWERTRAINS, TONS OF SAFETY
Toyota used the Chicago Auto Show as an opportunity to show off its best sellers, including the 2016 Avalon, and Camry and Corolla Special Editions. All three go on sale in the fall.
The 2016 Avalon continues the fourth generation of the Toyota’s premium family sedan. Models will come in five trims: XLE, XLE Plus, XLE Premium, Limited and Touring, along with three grades of hybrids.
The Avalon has two suspension setups for 2016. The XLE through Limited grades get dampers tuned for comfort; the Touring trim gets a sportier setup for more responsive control. Toyota says both setups are new and represent improvements over the current production car.
New standard features include a wider and lower grille, new turn signals, refined taillights, chrome accents and accent stitching. The XLE and XLE Plus get 17-inch wheels, a 7-inch Entune system and a woodgrain dash. The Limited trim adds optional advanced safety features including automatic high-beam headlights, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, precollision system and lane departure alert. Finally, the “performance-tuned” Touring model includes 18-inch wheels, a new front fascia and LED headlights.
Like last year, the Avalon will hide a 268-hp, 3.5-liter V6 under the hood returning 21 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway with a six-speed automatic transmission.
Pricing hasn’t been announced, but the 2015 model started between $34,000 and $38,000, so expect figures in that ballpark.
