HOOD COULD FLY UP DURING HIGH-SPEED TRAVEL
Nissan is expanding a recall in North America concerning the Altima sedan. The secondary hood latch could fail, allowing the hood to fly up while driving. If that happens, it could obviously result in an accident.
Altimas from model years 2013 to 2015 are affected, as long as they were built between March 6, 2012 and Dec. 31, 2014. About 878,000 vehicles are affected.
"Altima drivers can be sure their hood will not fly up as long as they don’t pull the primary hood release while driving or leave the primary hood release undone prior to driving," a Nissan spokesman said on Friday.
No reports of injuries or crashes have been related to the problem, according to Nissan, but there have been a few hoods that have flown up and damaged cars. The recall expands on a problem noticed last October.
A fix hasn’t been determined, but concerned owners can contact the company at (800) 647-7261 or NHTSA at (888) 327-4236.
