2016 Porsche Boxster Spyder debuts ahead of New York auto show

WITH 375 HP ON TAP AND A 4.3 SECOND 0-60 TIME TIME, SPYDER PROMISES AUTHENTIC ROADSTER THRILLS

The 2016 Porsche Boxster Spyder made its debut on the eve of the New York auto show, and just ahead of the summer drop-top season. The Spyder is staying true to the first-generation version, and that means a manual transmission will be the only transmission offered and the convertible top will still have to be opened and closed by hand, just like in the good old days. And by good old days we don't mean the 1990s, when then Boxster first debuted, even though we remember that model fondly. Porsche had an earlier historical period in mind when designing the car.

The 2016 Boxster Spyder will be powered by a 3.8-liter horizontally opposed six-cylinder engine good for 375 hp and a 4.3 second sprint from 0 to 60 mph. The exterior design of the Spyder will once again pay homage to the 718 Spyder from the 1960s, but it's more than just a Boxster with a chopped roof -- the front and rear fascias have been redesigned for the Spyder model. The new model sits 20 millimeters lower to the ground than the standard model, and is reportedly good for a top speed of 180 mph on your local derestricted autobahn.

The Boxster Spyder will occupy the top spot in the Boxster lineup, and it will also be the most powerful and the lightest in the range. If you want to experience the Boxster Spyder just like a 1960s roadster, you'll be able to order it with air conditioning or a radio; a tactic which may play better in some geographic locales than in others.

With or without those two items, the Boxster Spyder will still start at $83,095 when it goes on sale, with a firmer sport suspension than in the standard model and brakes borrowed from the 911 Carrera S also being standard equipment.
