2016 Cadillac CT6 debuts on the eve of the New York auto show

NEW CADILLAC HALO SEDAN READY TO TAKE ON THE LUXURY WORLD

Last September, Cadillac surprised the industry by moving its brand headquarters from the friendly confines of Detroit to the bright lights of New York City. Its plan was to remake its image and broaden its appeal outside of the country. Which explains why the CT6 sedan, the first totally new product since the move, was revealed the night before the New York auto show at an event in trendy Brooklyn.

“The CT6 is nothing less than an entirely new approach to premium luxury -– and an approach only Cadillac can offer,” said Johan de Nysschen, president of Cadillac. “It is a bold endeavor that reignites a passion for driving in large luxury vehicles. In short, it is prestige luxury reimagined.”

Those are bold words from de Nysschen, but from what we know so far, he could be right.

The CT6, which will lead the company’s nomenclature change, rides on GM’s new rear-drive Omega platform and uses an aluminum-intensive architecture to achieve both strength and efficiency. The result is a car that, at least in some configurations, weighs less than 3,700 lbs -- for some perspective, that's right in line with the smaller CTS.

Cadillac said it focused on three pillars when engineering the CT6: agility, connectivity and indulgence.

Agility is achieved via the big sedan's three engine options. Base models will get a 2.0-liter turbo four making 265 hp, upgraded models get the 335-hp 3.6-liter V6 and top models come with the new 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6. That engine, shared with the CTS V-sport, will deliver 400 hp. All are paired with eight-speed automatic transmissions.

Add optional Magnetic Ride Control and the Active Chassis System with rear steering and all-wheel drive to the equation, and we could be looking at a potent performer.

As for connectivity, the CT6 comes with the CUE entertainment/navigation screen, a 360-degree camera, night vision, park assist, a 10.2-inch touchscreen and of course, 4G LTE Wi-Fi.

After all of that, indulgence is easy. Install a few premium Opus leather seats with five massaging programs in front and articulation in the rear, add interior LED lighting, throw in some exotic woods, carbon fiber, rear-seat entertainment and call it a day. A premium Bose sound system, quad-zone climate and concierge welcome lights complete the package.

The 2016 Cadillac CT6 will go on sale at the end of 2015.
