BERLIN (Reuters) -- BMW Group said today that sales of its core BMW brand rose 5.1 percent in March to a record 195,593 cars, thanks to strong demand for the 2-series Active Tourer minivan and 4-series coupe. First-quarter brand sales rose 5.4 percent to 451,576, the automaker said, citing continued growth in Europe, North America and China.
BMW brand outsold its German premium rivals Mercedes-Benz and Audi last month. Mercedes sold 183,467 vehicles in March and Audi's volume was 177,950.
BMW said it delivered 9,790 units of the 2-series Active Tourer to customers in March out of a total of 14,696 sales for the 2-series range. The brand delivered 18,373 units of the 4 series.
BMW group sales including BMW, Mini and Rolls-Royce vehicles rose 9.2 percent in March to 232,556. Mini sales were up 39 percent to 36,635. Rolls-Royce sales fell to 328 from 781 a year earlier. Motorcycle sales were 15,912, up nearly 5 percent.
BMW's sales and marketing chief, Ian Robertson, said the European recovery, a strong U.S. market and a new-product momentum helped the company to achieve its best first quarter sales to date.
Quarterly group sales were up 8.1 percent to 526,669 vehicles with BMW brand up 5.4 percent, Mini sales up 28 percent and Rolls-Royce down 13 percent.
