For $5,000, take the hands-on approach
It takes a certain amount of confidence and a particular set of skills (Ed: good luck) to wield the 2015 Corvette Z06 competently on the track. It takes an entirely different set of skills (and no small amount of confidence) to build the car’s 650-hp supercharged LT4 V8 engine.
If you feel up to the challenge, Chevrolet is once again offering its Z06 Engine Build Experience at the Corvette factory in Bowling Green, Ky. -- a unique-to-the-industry program that lets you participate in the construction of your car’s motor.
This isn’t the first time Chevy has offered the program; C6 Z06 and ZR1 buyers were able to participate in past years. And no, they don’t just toss you a Haynes Guide and a torque wrench and tell you to do your best. You’ll be working with the chipper bunch at Bowling Green’s Performance Build Center, located right next to the Corvette assembly line. At the end of it all, you’ll get to attach a little plaque to the car telling the world what you’ve done.
Unfortunately, the finished engine won’t be dropped straight into your car moments after it rolls out of the PCB -- you'll have to wait for your personal Z06 to work its way through the regular build schedule. You can opt for NCM museum delivery, although that would presumably involve a return trip to Bowling Green at a later date.
The Engine Build Experience package costs $5,000, and it’s available for all Z06 trims. You’ll pay for personal transportation to and from Bowling Green. It’s worth making the trip, even if you’re not ordering up a new C7 or planning to build your Z06’s motor -- though the infamous sinkhole’s days are numbered. Still, there's a lot to see at the Corvette Museum and the adjacent motorsports park.
