Volkswagen introduces lower-priced e-Golf Limited Edition; trims sticker $2,000

ELECTRIC HATCH FEATURES SAME RANGE, FEWER FEATURES, LOWER COST

A lower-priced version of the 2015 Volkswagen e-Golf goes on sale today. The e-Golf Limited Edition will sticker for $33,450 -- $2,000 less than its SEL counterpart.

The e-Golf gets power from a 24.2-kWh lithium-ion battery and a compact electric motor. Output is rated at 115 hp and 199 lb-ft of torque. The DC Fast Charging system allows an 80 percent charge in just 30 minutes with its 7.2-kW onboard charger.

The lower-priced Limited Edition trim comes standard with 16-inch steel wheels instead of aluminum alloys, cloth instead of leatherette and deletion of the heat pump system cabin climate control system. Instead, you presumably get a less efficient (but less expensive) electric cabin heater, which might cut into your real-world range.

Remaining standard features include keyless entry, navigation, LED daytime running lights, dual-zone climate control, parking sensors and a rear-view camera.

The e-Golf is rated 126 mpge in the city, 105 mpge on the highway. The EPA estimates a range of 83 miles on a single charge. Three driving modes are meant to help drivers save energy and include normal, eco and eco-plus. They are joined by three driver-selectable regeneration modes.

The Volkswagen e-Golf sits in the middle of the pack as far as EV sales go in the United States, beating out the Focus Electric, Cadillac ELR and Chevy Spark, but getting trounced by the Chevy Volt, BMW i3, Tesla and Nissan Leaf.
